Dermapen - Medical Micro Needling

What is it?

Collagen induction therapy (CIT) or Dermapen is one of the latest and greatest advancements in medical skin needling.

Dermapen shows similar results as laser and other procedures, however, the Dermapen costs less, and the healing time is much shorter.

For anti-aging purposes, it has a superior effect on collagen and elastin rejuvenation.

Dermapen vs Traditional Dermal Rollers?

Traditional dermal rollers have a fixed needle depth. The Dermapen can vary the depth from 0.25 to 2.5 mm. Therefore a wider variety of conditions can be treated. This also makes it easier to treat under the eyes, the sides of the nose, and the top lip for smoker lines.  The Dermapen has disposable needles, which ensures no risk of cross-infection. It is less painful and has shorter treatment times with faster recovery times than the dermal roller used at the same depth.

How is done?

The Dermapen is a hand-held medical device for clinical use. It has a disposable piece that is inserted into the top of the device that contains many tiny sterile needles. These needles penetrate the skin at different levels depending on the part of the face, the depth of the scar, or the condition being treated. These needle points close within an hour after the procedure is completed.

The penetration causes a micro-injury to the skin. The skin will naturally start repairing the injury, which results in release of new collagen and elastin whilst breaking down old collagen and scar tissue.

The increased amount of topical nutrients reaches down to the deepest layers of the skin. This process stimulates the repair of the micro-injury, which lasts for several weeks.

The Dermapen’s impressive results are backed up by many clinical studies.

Dermapen skin microneedling procedure is a 45-minute treatment with our aesthetician which includes face cleansing. During the procedure, we apply a Clinicare serum specifically chosen for your needs. The post-treatment includes skin quenching, a cooling hyaluronic gel mask, which soothes and relaxes the skin. This also greatly helps with reducing skin redness after the procedure.

Who is it recommended for?

  • Aged Sagging Skin

  • Fine Lines & Wrinkles

  • Smokers Lines around lips

  • Skin Tightening & Rejuvenation

  • Large Pores

  • Stretch Marks

  • Acne Scars

  • Surgical Scars

  • Burns

  • Pigmentation

How it looks in the end?

Depending on the area of your face or body being treated and the type of device used (i.e. needle length), the procedure is well-tolerated and in some cases virtually painless, feeling only a mild prickling sensation.

Your practitioner will apply a topical anesthetic to your skin before treatment to reduce any pain and discomfort.

Your skin will be pink or red in appearance, much like a sunburn, for a couple of hours following treatment. Minor bleeding and bruising are possible depending on the length of the needle used and the number of times it is pressed across the treatment area.

Your skin may feel warm, tight, and itchy for a short while. This should subside in 12-48 hours.

How long does it last?

The results from micro-needling skin remodeling can go on for months after each Dermapen treatment. You will normally notice results 1-8 weeks after the last procedure. Most clients experience changes after the first treatment.

Lasting and more significant results will occur after 4-6 treatments. It is important that you schedule the next procedure within the recommended time limit. Your skin naturally heals itself every 45 days. Therefore, with micro-needling stimulation, the changes can be effective and ongoing. The full effects of skin tightening might not show until 6 months after your last treatment.

Side effects?

Side effects or risks are minimal with this type of treatment and typically include minor flaking or dryness of the skin with scab formation in rare cases. Hyper-pigmentation (darkening of certain areas of the skin) can occur very rarely and usually resolves after a month.

If you have a history of cold sores, this procedure may cause flare-ups. Temporary redness and mild sunburn effects may last up to 4 days. Freckles may temporarily lighten or permanently disappear in treated areas. Other potential risks include crusting, itching, discomfort, bruising, infection, swelling, and failure to achieve the desired result. Permanent scarring (less than 1%) is extremely rare.

Refill/Touch Up?

The number of procedures varies according to individual differences and the condition being treated.

The guideline below shows the average amount of procedures needed:

  • Acne Scarring: 4-6 treatments. We recommend 6 weeks between each procedure.

  • Skin Rejuvenation/Collagen Induction: 4-6 treatments. We recommend 4 weeks between each procedure.

  • Stretch Marks: Approx. 4-6 treatments. We recommend 6 weeks between each procedure.

What to expect during and after your session?

To ensure that the procedure is not painful we apply an anesthetic cream beforehand. Therefore, you will only feel a slight sensation.

The treated area will be red for 12-48 hours and your skin may feel warmer and tighter than usual. You should keep your face free of make-up the whole day.  After that, the redness can be minimized with a concealer. The skin may flake slightly 2-3 days after the procedure.
